Athletic shoes aren’t cheap, so you certainly want to get your wear out of them. But what should you do when they get dirty and smell like a locker room? If you search around the internet, you will find people telling you to put them in the washing machine or dishwasher. These methods may actually harm your shoes. Here is how to take care of them properly.
- First, let any mud dry. Take the shoes outside and lightly hit them against each other or something like a deck railing to dislodge as much of the dry dirt as possible.
- Next, use a damp soft cloth to wipe off as much of the mess as you can. If needed, use a mild detergent.
- After the outsides have dried, sprinkle a bit of baking soda inside the shoes to help neutralize the odor. Let the baking soda sit in the shoes overnight, and then dump the baking soda out in to the trash.
Hand washing your athletic shoes may take more time and effort than throwing them in the washing machine, but it will keep your shoes clean and they will last longer.
